It's described as a "Poster Coaster" a "Plaque & Snack Mat". It's a laminated image measuring approximately 7-1/2" x 10" with a label on the back that can written on then peeled off.

Take a look at the two cards below...

The first is Nickel Tour #1498 and the second is #1507. These images must have been taken within minutes of each other as the backgrounds are almost identical; the only real difference between the two are the guests on the drawbridge in the first image.

3D Cards

Have you seen these? The first card is Nickel Tour #0619, described as Cinderella and Witch; but we all know there was no witch in Cinderella. I guess the long pointed blue hat made the Fairy Godmother look like one.

The next card is Nickel Tour #0621, Sleeping Beauty and Prince Phillip.

The Nickel Tour has no image of these so it was a real treat to come upon these cards. Along with them was a card not shown nor mentioned in The Nickel Tour and is described as Aladdin and Genie.

All three were printed in Japan by the W.C. Jones Publishing Company in the mid 60s. Enjoy!

Squeakers Part I

These cards were sold in the Art Corner shop located in Tomorrowland from 1957 through 1962. They were standard sized cards with a device inserted between two layers allowing them to "squeak". Here are three of the harder to find cards.

Going through a box I purchased some time ago I came across this interesting postcard.

It's hard to see but written in pencil in the upper left on the back is "Disney Family 1951"

What really makes this find interesting is in the plastic sleeve with the card was a small piece of paper with information about the Disney family.

Destination D

I was fortunate to attend D23's Destination D last weekend and met up with some old and new friends; it was a great time. As part of our registration we received a pack of postcards; and of course, since it is D23, there were 23 postcards.

Being a postcard collector I figured out in advance they would be reproductions of the first 23 postcards listed in The Nickel Tour. What I didn't expect was that they would be EXACT duplications; front AND back. The only thing that differentiated them from the originals was the quality of the paper. I was hoping there would be a different back with a brief description of the front, a little history of the card and the D23 Destination logo. On Saturday September 18 we attended the Marvelous Mechanized Magic Kingdom, presented by The 1313 Club and Ape Pen Publishing, at the Disneyland Hotel. Three of the guest speakers were Kathryn Beaumont (voice of Alice in Alice in Wonderland ), Alice Davis and X Atencio. I had the opportunity to speak with them and have them sign a few postcards. Below is an Alice in Wonderland card signed by Kathryn...

Next is a Pirates of the Caribbean card signed by X...

And last, but not least is, It's a Small world card signed by Alice...

I saved Alice's card for last as she had a very interesting story to tell. When I handed her the card I asked if she remembered working on It's a Small World she said, "Yes, I then graduated to working on dirty old men for a dirty old man." She was referring to Pirates of the Caribbean and Marc Davis. She also apologized for misspelling her name because "at the age of 82 it's becoming difficult to write and talk at the same time." I wish I could have stories to tell like her when I'm 82.

The other day we were in the Park early enough to see the Disneyland band perform in front of the floral Mickey. I made a comment about how bright and white their costumes looked and how they've changed over the years. With that being said, let's take a look at a few of these changes.

Below, from my collection, are NT: 0595, "Send a Disneykin from Disneyland". The Nickel Tour states these are circa 1955, however; Disneykins.com claims they're from 1961. These are postcards with a plastic bubble that contained a Disneykin. Made by Marx, Disneykins were injection molded hard plastic representations of Disney characters and hand-painted by artists in British Hong Kong.

Below are three others I aquired the other day. Unlike the previous two, these do not say "Send a Disneykin from Disneyland" and have the 1961 Walt Disney Copyright in the lower right corner.

Also, you'll notice von Drake is sporting a purple coat and gray vest in the first image, a green coat and pink vest in the second and a blue coat and pink vest in the third; you know how I love variations.

Happy Birthday Space Mountain

Sorry for this post being late, I didn't realize I had so much Space Mountain grand opening stuff.

"Space Mountain opened in 1977, invigorating a decade-old Tomorrowland as Disneyland's second roller coaster. The idea for Anaheim's ride originated in the mid 1960s during Walt Disney's lifetime as a way to energize the aging Tomorrowland. The project was shelved until the success of Space Mountain in Florida. After two years of construction, the $20 million complex opened May 27 including the roller coaster, 1,100-seat Space Stage, 670-seat Space Place (fast food restaurant) and Starcade". I was working at Disneyland in the Engineering department during the opening celebration. Sneaking out with my camera I captured the following images. Below is Disney CEO Card Walker as M/C over the celebration with Mercury Astronaut Alan Shepard to his right and Disneyland Ambassador Susan Donald to his left.

Next is a view of the original Mercury astronauts minus Virgil "Gus" Grissom who died in 1967 along with Edward White and Roger Chaffee aboard Apollo 1. Mrs. Grissom stood in his place.

Next is the entrance and warning sign in front; notice how clean everything looks.

Below is an image of the Space Place snack bar located to the right of the stage.

Next is the program handed out during the ceremony.

As an employee we celebrated the opening with a Cast Member pre-opening party. I'll have to save these images for another time as I have more than I knew I had, besides; it gives me a topic for another post.

Tomorrowland Viewliner II

A while back I posted an image of the red Tomorrowland Viewliner with the Autopia in the foreground. Tonight I have a couple more from the lot. Here's a view of the Viewliner looking back from the Tomorrowland Skyway.

Next is the Viewliner traveling over what is now, I believe, the Submarine Lagoon.

Too bad this lot didn't have any images of the blue Fantasyland Viewliner.

Error 5

Below is Nickel Tour #0305, card B-14, Elephant Bathing Pool.

You'll notice on the back of the card under the title "Elephant Bathing Pool" there's a typo; it says "...cruise down the Rivers of Adenture" when it should say "Adventure".

I don't think they caught this error as I haven't come across a card that has been corrected.

Tomorrowland Viewliner

While going through some postcards I recently aquired I found this gem tuck in between them.

It's the Tomorrowland Viewliner. There's no date on the photo but had to be taken in '57 or '58. What makes it a true gem for postcards collectors like myself is the image of the purple Autopia car in the lower left corner.

Art Corner

I thought I would let the scanner cool down a bit and throw out a post. This is Nickel Tour #0586; it's one of the Art Corner cards showing Huey, Dewey and Louie on the Dumbo Ride.

Above them is only one text box; any idea as to why the other two are blank? Was it left open so you can add your own message? Was it an error in the design? Go figure.

Disneyland Hotel

Just came back from the postcard show in Glendale, California. A dealer friend of mine had put an item aside for me and I was looking forward to picking it up. It's a small viewer from the Disneyland Hotel Camera shop.

It's approximately 2" long, 7/8" by 1" at the image end and 1/2" square at the viewer end. It has an orange card approximately 3" by 4-1/4" attached to it with a small chain. It is stamped "Disneyland Hotel Camera Shop" and someone has penciled "1962 Trip" on the front.

The back has a space for a return address, destination address and stamp box making it in my collection a postcard.

If anyone has never tried to take a picture through one of these things, let me tell you it's quite a challenge. What make this interesting is the view of the Hotel. The signage says "Hotel Disneyland" not "Disneyland Hotel". Also the building seems to be narrower.

I tried to match it up with an image of the Hotel from my collection and came up with this one. Although taken at a different angle, you can see the three palm trees to the left of the elevator shaft. I was thinking, maybe, a little pre-Photoshop manipulation to make it fit into the viewer? What do you think?

French Postcards

Described by The Nickel Tour as the second rarest set of postcards, next to the Black and White series, this set depicts a scene from France with Disney characters superimposed on them.

Sold in Disneyland this twenty card set have fluted edges and measure approximately 4" x 6".

Not the typical French postcard you're used to hearing about.

Dial Guides

Walt Disney World Transportation

Next time you're in Walt Disney World and in need of some extra adventure, try going on a scavenger hunt collecting the Tranportation Trading Cards. Introduced during the summer of 2006, Disney created a series of Transportation trading cards. There are 18 different cards depicting the three major modes of transportation; buses, watercraft and monorails. There are three different bus cards,

three different watercraft,

and twelve different monorail.

On the back you'll find trivia questions as well as hidden Mickey tips and information about that particular mode of transportation.

Don't plan to collect all 18 during one trip unless you plan on spending your entire vacation riding buses, boats and monorails, as they're limited and only bus drivers have the bus cards, watercraft operators have the watercraft cards and monorail operators have the monorail cards. And the best thing about them is that they're FREE, all you have to do is ask.

Art Corner "Animated" Postcards

A while back the Major at Gorillas Don't Blog featured three Squeaker cards from the Art Corner in Tomorrowland. I thought I would follow them up with a few Art Corner Animated cards. Below are Nickel Tour #0573 and #0575. They're standard size postcards with a plastic animated square attached to it.

But don't be fooled by the following cards; these are "knock off" cards not listed in The Nickel Tour. The paper cards themselves were produced from the same publisher but, as you can tell, the animated feature is smaller than the space provided. Someone probably had a surplus of cards and scrounged up what they could find to paste on them; besides, what does Donald lifting weights have to do with a mermaid under water?

I just aquired Nickel Tour #0475, card J-15, Adventureland - Animals and now have the complete set of Panorama postcards.

There are 13 cards in this series measuring 3-1/2" by 11" and were produced in a folder as well.

Sorry for not having anything Halloween related to report but I do have these interesting items. Last year I purchased a box of Disney paraphernilia at a postcard show. Inside was a felt pennant, measuring approximately 29" by 12", with a Disneyland 3-D postcard attached to it. It happens to be Nickel Tour #0609, card 1-517. Knowing this card was copyrighted in 1966 by Walt Disney Productions, I would assume the pennant came out that time or shortly after.

I was fortunate earlier this year to aquire another similar pennant. It also measures approximately 29" by 12" with a Disneyland 3-D postcard attached to it. This one, however, happens to be Nickel Tour #0606, card 1-514. As with the card above, it too was copyrighted 1966 by Walt Disney Productions and also came out about that time or shortly after.

Knowing these two exist, I wonder if pennants with the other two 3-D cards are somewhere out there?

Variation 6

It's been a while since my last post as I've really been trying to get back into working on my web site. In doing so I came across this variation of NT: 0977, 01110482 DT-35929-C, It All Started With A Mouse. The image in the Nickel Tour is the one shown below. Notice it has no clouds and the banner "behind" Mickey's left ear is blue and yellow.

You'll notice in the variation shown below there are now clouds added as well as the banner is now purple and yellow.

In April of 1964, Walt Disney personally selected the site for Walt Disney World while flying over Central Florida in this Grumman G-159 Gulfstream I. The cards are copyrighted 1964 by Walt Disney Productions and show a view of the plane in flight and an interior view of the cabin.

The plane is now on display at the Disney Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World.

Variation (?)

While completing Cards #1216 thru #1320 I remembered this card; it's Nickel Tour #1287, card 0100-10486, Fantasy in the Sky. This postcard in particular was sent to those who ordered the Olympic Spirit Passport. This one happens to be one sent to the late Bruce Gordon.

The passport, shown below, was issued to commemorate the 1984 Olympics. It came with a nice medallion with a red, white and blue ribbon.

Variations 5

Let's get back to the real focus of this blog and that is Disneyland Postcards. This variation is Nickel Tour #1006, card 01110511, DT-35935-C, Matterhorn Mountain. Notice this card has clouds and a black back.

This variation is without clouds and a blue back. There's also a variation without clouds and a black back.

Also, get a look at the people in the picture. The man in the blue sweater doesn't look too happy to be there and the woman in the red definately doesn't want her picture taken.

This section contains what I have in the area of the 1964 New York World's Fair. I really don't know much about the fair except what I've heard and read so forgive me if some of my information in incorrect.

Well, it's been a while, almost two months, but I really didn't have much to post untill now. I've added to this section and have a couple more I'm working on. I'll be attending a Disney fan club convention next week and plan on seeing my favorite vendor when it comes to Disneyland postcards; don't be surprised if you see a couple more posts in the next few days. I'll give you a clue; they have to do with hotels around Disneyland and the 1964 New York World's Fair. Well, enough for now, I've got to get back to work before the scanner cools down.

I decided to take a break from my site and blog for a while, I didn't realize it had been this long. Last Saturday I attended a mini reunion of the Disneyland Alumni club at the Holiday Inn in Anaheim. While leaving we passed the gift shop and of course had to stop and look at the postcard rack. I came across this interesting aerial view of the Park. It wasn't until I got home that I took a good look at it. It's not a recent image; but when was it taken?

I first focused on the obvious, Tomorrowland, and noticed the Peoplemovers were still in operation. Therefore it must have been taken between 1967 and 1995. Taking a closer look I noticed they were white with painted stripes which narrowed down the timeline between 1987 and 1995. I then turned my attention to it's a Small World's pastel facade but couldn't find a timeline when it was painted these colors so I moved on. Tom Sawyer's island caught my eye next. I beleive that's the Fantasmic stage out by Laffite's Tavern. Knowing that Fantasmic began in 1992 further narrowed the timeline between 1992 and 1995. This is what makes collecting Disneyland postcards interesting. Not only are we, as collectors, collecting Disneyland artifacts but we're also preserving moments in the Park's history.

Well, it’s completed; the section containing cards #0657 thru #0781B, 1-xxx is finished. Consisting of 194 cards, fronts and backs, this series contains several new approaches, not seen in previous pages. With all the variations in this series, especially with the backs, I decided to include a section of pages devoted to them. I also changed the way the images appear on the pages. I plan to continue using this “evolution” in future series and plan, when time permits, to go back and upgrade the pages already uploaded. So, take a look and let me know what you think; it truly has become a labor of love.

Streets of Paris

I once told a vendor friend of mine I was still looking for a particular VHTF postcard and if I were ever to find this card and never add another card to my collection I would consider my collection complete. The card is Nickel Tour #0122, card D-131, Streets of Paris. It’s an interior view of the Art Corner in Tomorrowland which made its debut during the Park’s first summer and closing in 1966. Well, here’s the card I just added to my collection.

As for never adding another card to my collection and considering my collection complete, well, there’s still a few elusive cards out there still waiting to be found.

Golden Horseshoe Revue

While scanning my postcards I came across this image of The Golden Horseshoe Revue. It's Nickel Tour #0707, Card 1-295, Golden Horseshoe Revue released between 1965 and 1969.

There's nothing special about this card. I just thought it was a classic image of the Golden Horseshoe troupe; Wally Boag (Pecos Bill), Fulton Burley, Betty Taylor (Slue Foot Sue), the Golden Horseshoe Can-Can girls and last, but not least, the Golden Horseshoe "Orchestra".

Thought I would take a break from scanning and throw out another variation; besides I think we're over due for one. This one's Nickel Tour #0312, card C-1, Frontierland Entrance.

It's a good example when someone talks about blue water, green water; with clouds or without clouds.

In a previous comment it was mentioned that instead of actually adding clouds and darkening the sky, they could have actually "burned" (photographic term for darkening) the sky to bring out the clouds and the color of the sky.

From 1957 through 1962 the Art Corner in Tomorrowland produced a series of postcards depicting Disney characters with a squeaker inside; one of them is Nickel Tour #0554, "I'm Dopey".

The front may be Dopey, but Si and Am managed to find their way on to the back.

Just about any Disneyland postcard collector has the following card in their collection; it's Nickel Tour #0440, card E-8, Submarine Falls.

But are you sure you have this one? Take a look at the back.

Take a CLOSER look.

Take a look at the card in your collection and see if this is the one. It's definately a card you wouldn't suspect unless you were out looking for it. I came across this strictly by accident.

Latest Aquisition 2 / Error 2

First of all, Happy belated New Year to everyone.

Just got back from a Vintage Paper Fair (Postcard Show) and must say was quite successful. These days, with the size of my collection, if I come away from a show with a card or two I'm doing good. This time I came away with seven; one of them is Nickel Tour #1465, card 0100-11404, The Wildest Ride in the Wilderness. This one qualifies as both a Latest Aquisition and an Error.

But wait, this isn't a Disneyland postcard. It's an image of Walt Disney World's Big Thunder Railroad.

But if you check out the back of the card you'll notice it was sold at Disneyland. I wonder how long they lasted on the racks before being pulled?

I know this doesn't qualify as a postcard, as something of this type could not possibly survive the postal system, but if you take a look at the back you'll see why I had to add it to the collection.

Made of 1/8" particle board, this 6" x 12" souvenir was sold in the Art Corner in the late 50s to early 60s.
As you can see in the image below of the interior of the Art Corner, there's a rack in the center displaying these "cards".

Below is a close up of the rack.

I'm not sure how many of these there are, but looking at this image and another in my collection, I see at least five others.

Variations 2

Sorry for not posting lately, I've been really busy adding cards to my web site.

This is a variation of Nickel Tour 0328, card C-5, Stage Coach, Conestoga Wagon and Mine Train. Notice the telephone poles just beyond the rock formations.

I guess they felt the "technology" didn't quite fit in with the time period so they were "scratched" out, a process used before Photoshop I guess. Also notice clouds were added to what I guess appeared as a dull sky line.

Another variation I collect is more of an error than an intentional change to the appearance of an image. These are misprints or defects in the production of the postcard themselves. I don't intentionally seek out these cards; they just present themselves when I'm looking through the thousands of cards I go through each year. An example of this would be Nickel Tour 1189, card 0111-1000, Mr. Lincoln - Disneyland U.S.A.; here's the way the card appeared off the racks.

However, some slipped by as this one did.

You'll notice the image is flipped with the blue field on the right side of the flag instead of the left. You'll also notice the American flag is on the left side of the stage instead of the right where it should be.

In the previous post I mentioned I collect variations of the same card; here's a classic example found in The Nickel Tour. It's Nickel Tour 0231, card A-3, the Horse-Drawn Streetcar. In this view you'll notice the yellow 10 cent Fare sign to the driver's upper left.

The story goes that Walt Disney didn't like to advertise the cost of his attractions so in this view the text on the sign has been "yellowed" over.

The bright yellow sign stood out so much that they decided to darken it in so it wasn't so obvious.

And finally the sign was completely airbrushed over to match the background. You'll also notice four guests on the right edge of the Streetcar. The second guest now has a maroon shirt, the third guest a yellow shirt and the fourth guest red shorts.
